The use of zones is a simplified way of representing effort intensity. It has the advantage of providing a simplified reference point during the race and to define intensity ranges.
Power Tool represents them in two ways:
It is also possible to create workouts via the Garmin Connect interface by specifying target power zones. The zones used, however, are those defined in Power Tool and not those defined on the Garmin’s platform.
The zones are defined in the Garmin Connect IQ parameters. For example, in for the following configuration, we have chosen to specify only the threshold pace:
In fact, the only mandatory value is the critical power or threshold speed. If other values are omitted, they are determined according to Stryd’s formula. For critical power input, we use the formulas:
Zone | Interval |
---|---|
1 | 65% - 80% CP |
2 | 80% - 90% CP |
3 | 90% - 100% CP |
4 | 100% - 115% CP |
5 | > 115% CP |
If instead of entering the critical power, the threshold pace is indicated (as here 5:05 min/km), this pace is converted into power and the zones are calculated using the same formula as for power.
The color conventions for the zones are as follows:
Zone | Color |
---|---|
0 | ⚪ transparent |
1.x | ⚫ gris |
2.x | 🔵 blue |
3.x | 🟢 vert |
4.x | 🟠 orange |
5.x | 🔴 rouge |
6 | 🟣 pourpre |
To display the zone, select the power zone for 3s, 5s, 10s, 15s, 30s or more as the field to be displayed:
In this example, for a treadmill run, the zone value over 30s is displayed as a secondary field, and the color of the progress bar corresponds to the instantaneous zone.
Finally, each time Power Tool is launched, it opens an analysis page showing the power and flat pace ranges for the zones. This gives you a better idea of the correspondence between your pace and power zones:
